Book of the Week: The Snail and the Whale

Book of the Week‘The Snail and the Whale’ is a title by the newly announced Children’s Laureate, Julia Donaldson who has also just received the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list. Julia Donaldson’s books are loved across the Junior Department, and even featured in a recent assembly by Class 1B! The storylines and word play are wonderful to read, and are always accompanied by excellent illustrations. In ‘The Snail and the Whale’, one tiny snail longs to see the world and hitches a lift on the tail of a whale. Together they go on an amazing journey, past icebergs and volcanoes, sharks and penguins, and the little snail feels so small in the vastness of the world. But when disaster strikes and the whale is beached in a bay, it's the tiny snail who saves the day.

The Snail and the Whale won the 2004 Early Years award for the best pre-school book, the 2005 Blue Peter award for Best Book to Read Aloud, and the 2007 Giverny award for Best Science Picture Book. The audio version, which includes The Snail and the Whale song, won the Spoken Book gold award for best audio for 6 and under.

‘The Snail and the Whale’ can be found in the Junior School Library.
