Drama

"A man walks across an empty space whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged."
Peter Brook

Drama empowers students in self expression and communication through performance skills.  Students develop as confident individuals, able to empathise with the community and the wider world whilst understanding the medium of theatre.  They accumulate dramatic skills which can be applied to a range of contexts.

Key Stage 3
Drama is part of the curriculum from Year 8, on rotation. In Year 9, it forms part of a carousel with DT and Textiles. Current schemes of work include Melodrama and Silent Movie, Rosa Parks Women and Change. We also introduce the explorative strategies required for GCSE Drama.

GCSE
Students follow the Edexcel specification for GCSE Drama. The course consists of three units. 60% of the course is practical work. Students explore different issues, themes and topics as well as a set text, and devise their own piece of drama for the final examination.

AS and A2 Level
Students follow the Edexcel specification for GCE Drama & Theatre Studies. Unit 1 consists of an exploration of two contrasting play texts in a practical and active way, supported by written coursework. Unit 2 is an externally- assessed performance comprising of two sections. There is also a design option.
Unit 3 requires the creation of a unique, original piece of theatre based on the knowledge and understanding gained in the AS units. Unit 4 is an externally examined written unit on a set text and a prescribed historical period of theatrical development.

Extra-Curricular Drama
School productions are integral part of drama at Putney. There are three productions each year as well as the House Drama Festival and a number of drama clubs.
