History of Art

Rome tripThe department aims to do more than teach students the new and exciting discipline of Art History. It hopes to provide a stimulating environment in which the girls can develop their intellectual and aesthetic capacities and learn to see cultures past and present from a range of perspectives.

AS and A Level

The Year 12 course offers an introduction to the Fine Arts of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture from Ancient Greece to the present day, focusing on themes such as subject, materials and techniques, form in architecture, style, historical context, patronage, status of the artist and gender, ethnicity and nationality. While in Year 13 we focus upon two distinct areas: Nineteenth Century Art and Architecture in Europe, and Art and Architecture in Europe and America 1900-1945. Further details are available at the AQARussia trip website.
We make full use of our location in central London to visit both permanent collections, and temporary exhibitions on a regular basis.  Students have the opportunity to travel further on our annual study trips. Paris, Florence, Rome and New York are popular destinations; last year we explored Moscow and St. Petersburg and next year will be joining the Classics Department for a visit to Greece.
By the time the students leave Putney we hope they have a passionate love of the arts and a lifelong commitment to investigating their significance in our lives.
