Introduction

Senior School

The Senior School promises a stimulating environment which nurtures confidence and creativity.

Key Stage 3 – Years 7-9

In Year 7, girls are not set for any subject to ensure they have an equal opportunity to develop, regardless of the material covered in their previous school.

Girls are mainly taught in their form groups. For science, maths, ICT and Art, they are taught in smaller groups of around 20. For Technology subjects (Textile and DT), girls are taught in half classes of 14.

By year 8, more than half of lessons are taught in smaller groups and in Year 9, that figure rises to 75 per cent. This enables more individual attention, use of specialist facilities and allows girls to integrate with girls from other forms.

In Year 7, all girls study a foundation year of German and Spanish. Bilingual girls are given excellent support from the Languages Department. In Year 8 they study Chinese (Mandarin) and French. Each of these is for two hours per language per week. In Year 9, girls select their preferred three languages, with Latin also included in the choice.

In Year 7, girls study combined science but from Year 8, biology, physics and chemistry are taught separately.

Girls in Year 8 and year 9 are set for Mathematics .

All girls follow programmes of study based on a considerably developed National Curriculum. For full details of subject choices please download the Annual Information Booklet.

Key Stage 4 – Years 10-11

All girls study Mathematics, English, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and at least one modern language to GCSE. They are set for Mathematics and Science.

In addition, they have a free choice of three other GCSE subjects, including Art, Classical Civilisation, Design Technology, Drama, Geography, History, Latin, Music, Physical Education and Religious Studies.

Sixth Form

Here girls develop a more independent, yet responsible, attitude to learning. This provides a comfortable transition into a more adult setting.

Students in Years 12 and 13 have a free choice of AS and A Level subjects. Girls are offered support and guidance regarding university entrance. Staff offer particular assistance tailored to the needs of those applying to Oxford and Cambridge.

In addition, girls benefit from:

  • General Studies: a varied lecture and workshop programme and enrichment activities such as Sport, Young Enterprise, Japanese and Public Speaking.
  • Personal, Social and Health Education
  • Voluntary Service
