Prestigious Awards

Arkwright ScholarshipAlice Foreman and Kenza Sarmouk have both been awarded an Arkwright Scholarship for their outstanding work in design, engineering and technology. The scholars attended a ceremony held at the Institution of Engineering & Technology, Savoy Place London, in October 2010.

The afternoon awards were presented by Professor Dame Ann Dowling FREng FRS, Head of the Department of Engineering, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of Cambridge.

Arkwright ScholarshipDame Ann commented “I was so impressed by the achievements of the Arkwright scholars, who combine academic excellence with a wide range of other skills and hobbies. It is great to know that these talented and creative young people are thinking of careers in design and technology. The UK has a real need for engineers who can contribute to addressing some of the challenges that face mankind, such as meeting our needs for energy, water and food in sustainable ways, and building a robust economy based on products and services that people want.”

Scholars are selected following a rigorous selection process comprising an application, Arkwright Aptitude Paper and interview.  During the interview students presented their GCSE project work to a panel of interviewers and discussed their commitment to design, engineering and technology.  Interviews are hosted across the country by universities.  Interviewees participated in a team activity and toured the engineering / design departments.

The Arkwright Trust was founded in 1990 and this year celebrates its 20th year of Scholarship awards.  Arkwright supports young people during their A Level/Scottish Higher years by awarding £250 a year to assist with the purchase of materials and books. The students will also carry the status of ‘Arkwright Scholar’ into university. Scholarships are supported by individuals, companies, institutions and the services.

Alice Foreman is sponsored by The Lloyds Register Educational Trust and Kenza Sarmouk is sponsored by KPMG International Cooperative.  Well done girls!
