Biology

Image"The fact of evolution is the backbone of biology, and biology is thus in the peculiar position of being a science founded on an improved theory, is it then a science or faith?"  Charles Darwin

The Biology department at Putney High School is lively and successful.  We have three modern labs within the science block in which we carry out a wide range of practical work, including traditional dissections and modern gel electrophoresis.  All labs are equipped with interactive smart-boards and the use of visual techniques to improve learning is inherent in our teaching, from microscopy to molecular animations.

GCSE

We follow the OCR 21st Century Science specification, with nearly all pupils taking a separate GCSE in Biology.

AS and A Level

We take the OCR AS/A level GCE. The students spend two days on ecology fieldwork in Year 12 followed by a five-day residential fieldtrip in Year 13.  Biology continues to be a popular choice for AS and A Level, and many of our students go to study related courses at university, including medicine.
