Chemistry is a flourishing, well organised and successful department and continues to build on its excellent record. The success of the department is based on rigorous teaching and committed and enthusiastic specialist teachers. Achievement in exams is exceptionally good and the number of students taking Chemistry at A-Level continues to grow each year.
Students are encouraged to enjoy the subject and achieve their full potential. The course has a great deal of emphasis on practical work with ‘practical skills coursework’, the marks for which are consistently high each year.
Through the course there will be several opportunities for educational visits to venues such as: The Royal Society of Chemistry, Denby’s Vineyard, The Wellcome Foundation and others.
It is common knowledge that Chemistry is one of the most highly regarded A-level subjects both by Universities and by employers and an essential pre-requirement for some courses such as Medicine and Veterinary Sciences. Almost all students go on to University, many at Oxford, Cambridge, Medical School, Veterinary School and Law School.
During Years 7 & 8 the students follow the Hodder Science course and the three disciplines are taught as separate lessons from Year 8 onwards. The school follows the 21st Century Science course at GCSE, which places our ideas in science within a modern context.
A LevelFor A level Chemistry the students follow the OCR and Edexcel course. They receive a CD which contains past papers and answers, fact-sheets, definitions needed for the exam, syllabus statements, web-links and other important information.
