Introduction

The Design Technology (DT) department aims to teach innovative individuals to possess a passion for design and an ability to create high quality products.

The Curriculum

The department follows guidelines issued by the National Curriculum programmes of study.  Students have the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills of materials, components and processes. They carry out product analysis and have the opportunity to take part in focussed practical tasks and create projects within Textiles and Resistant Materials.

KS3

Year 7 study DT for one double period per week.  In RM they design and make a memo holder and in Textiles they learn how to use an electric sewing machine and make a tote bag.

Year 8 also study DT for one double period a week. In RM they work in groups to batch produce a tea light lantern.  In Textiles they use a block pattern to design and make a skirt.

Year 9 students study DT as part of a carousel system alongside Drama. Textiles and RM are taught for one double period per week. The course is approximately nine weeks. In Textiles they use CAD/CAM and different surface decoration techniques to make a cushion or wall hanging.  In RM they design and make jewellery using plastic, metal or wood.
