Putney High School

History of Art

Rome tripThe department aims to do more than teach students the new and exciting discipline of Art History. It hopes to provide a stimulating environment in which the girls can develop their intellectual and aesthetic capacities and learn to see cultures past and present from a range of perspectives.

AS and A Level

The Year 12 course offers an introduction to the Fine Arts of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture from Ancient Greece to the present day, while in Year 13 we focus upon two distinct areas: High Renaissance Art in Rome, and Painting in Paris from 1900 to 1914.  Students also write a 3000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice. Further details are available at the AQA website.

We make full use of our location in central London to visit both permanent collections, and temporary exhibitions on a regular basis.  Students have the opportunity to travel further on our annual study trips. Paris, Florence, Rome and New York are popular destinations and this year we are exploring Moscow and St. Petersburg.

By the time they leave Putney we hope the girls have a passionate love of the arts and a lifelong commitment to investigating their significance in our lives.
