Welcome to the Physics page

ImageAll science is either physics or stamp collecting” (Ernest Rutherford)

When teaching Physics we build an understanding of the nature and workings of the Universe and how to apply this knowledge to solve real world problems.

While we don’t necessarily condone Rutherford’s quote, we recognise that Physics embodies the fundamental principles on which all science is built and it provides the basis for developments in technology and engineering.

In addition to being a fascinating subject in its own right, studying Physics helps students to develop numerical, analytical, and practical skills which will prove invaluable throughout life.

The breadth of Physics ranges from the smallest parts of atoms to the planets, stars and the Universe itself and our curriculum mirrors this. Hands-on practical work is a vital part of all Physics courses and we strive to provide as much as possible to enrich and illuminate the curriculum.

Key Stage 3

In Years 7 and 8 the girls follow the "Oxford Science Works" KS3 course, providing a solid and broad base for further study. They cover the topics of energy and fuels, force and motion, electric circuits, the solar system, energy transfers, sound and music and light and magnetism.

GCSE

In Year 9 the girls start the Twenty First Century Science course, working towards a separate Physics GCSE qualification. Coursework is completed in Year 10 and exam modules sat in Years 10 and 11. Girls find that the emphasis of putting science ideas into context makes the material more interesting and accessible than a more traditional content-led course.

A level

A level students follow the AQA ‘A’ syllabus. Girls benefit greatly from small class sizes and several students each year will progress to study Physics or engineering at leading universities.
