'Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world.' Louis Pasteur
Science at Putney is not about belief, but the will to find out. We aim to open up the minds of the girls to an understanding of the value, relevance and importance of scientific endeavour in the world around them. Experimentation is at the heart of our approach and we take full advantage of the excellent laboratories, resources and facilities we have here.
Above all Science is there to be enjoyed. Aside from being the single most important factor that distinguishes our modern world from earlier times, it also holds an immense fascination. We hope to bring that enjoyment to our lessons and provide a firm foundation for further reading, the planting of ideas in the mind and providing the tools for individual research.
In Year 7 the department has introduced the Science Works course which is taught in three double periods a week. From Year 8 onwards the three disciplines are taught as separate subjects.
The school follows the 21st Century Science Course at GCSE, which places our ideas in science within a modern context.
We look for the vast majority of the girls to take the separate sciences in Biology, Chemistry and Physics as an excellent basis for A-level study.
