Life Skills

PHSE lessonsLife Skills is an important part of the curriculum at Putney High School. Girls are taught Life Skills by their Tutors, with the addition of specialist speakers representing the health professions, careers guidance specialists and others with specific expertise. In particular, a nurse form the Wandsworth Family Planning Service talks to each year group and holds drop-in sessions where girls can raise any concerns they may have.

In Years 7 to 11 part of the Life Skills programme is delivered during a weekly lesson with the girls’ Tutors. The course covers several broad themes which the girls are free to discuss in the supportive atmosphere of the tutor group.  The main themes are:

  • Health education including diet, exercise, drugs, smoking and alcohol misuse.
  • Sex and relationships education including assertiveness and anti-bullying strategies.
  • Citizenship
  • Introduction to financial management
  • Careers education
  • Study skills
  • Personal safety – including sessions with the local police and a self defence course in Year 10.

In addition, Year 10 follow a programme which covers current affairs, economic management, careers, an introduction to Philosophy and contemporary social and health issues.

Assemblies

The girls’ personal development is also enhanced through assemblies where topics of a spiritual, moral, social or cultural theme are explored.  Every form in the school prepares and presents an assembly each year, assisted by the Tutor, where they are able to explore one topic in more depth.
